1.) MISTAKE HANDLING Like it or not, you will flub. Someday, in fact, it will be bad…in front of a new client while narrating a high-budget voice-over. But that’s okay. Engineers and producers are used to this. And audio-recorders are designed to handle mistakes easily with editing functions such as “copy,” “paste,” “insert” and so forth (just like your word-processor). What differentiates the newcomer from the experienced voice-talent is how they act when flubbing. Becoming concerned, embarrassed, nervous, flustered, angry, and/or disappointed with oneself is a clear give-away that you are inexperienced. Production teams dislike these negative emotions because they create tension in your delivery, which, besides not sounding good, make it difficult for you to follow direction. Once in this state, it becomes more and more difficult to eventually gain vocal control. So how do you avoid negative emotions? Simple. Just know that even the most experienced voice-talent make mistakes. In fact, sometimes they have horrendous days. When this occurs, experienced voice-talent will make a quick apology and say, “Do you mind if I try that again?” Often they make self-deprecating jokes. “I gotta lay off the whiskey before my next session…hahaha.” Or, “Sorry about that…but hey, they told me I’m getting paid by the hour, so I thought I’d drag this out a bit…hope you don’t mind.” Remember that production teams hire you because they like you and your voice. They’re there to help you. They’re on your team…they’re not working against you. So if you feel negative feelings coming on, take a quick deep breath, smile, and think like a pro. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ADVERTISEMENT Happy with the work
