2.) GIVE GREAT READS!

Your goal is to read well. Our goal is to help you. And simply incorporating a few characteristics into your delivery can make an impressive (marketable) difference.

1. The Two Delivery Components

There are two vocal components in voice-over delivery: emotion and technique. These components must work in unison, helping each other, and forming one fantastic vocal-delivery.

Emotion is the character in your voice, the feel, the ‘acting’ portion of your delivery.
If you have wonderful emotion but no technique, producers will not hire you. This is because you may sound great doing it your way, but in this industry, you need to sound great doing it their way.

Technique is the control you have of your voice, your ability to follow producer’s direction.
If you have wonderful technique but no emotion, producers will not hire you. This is because you will sound robotic, unnatural, and stiff.

2. Composure

It is virtually impossible to quantify a ‘feeling.’ However if we needed to, we would estimate that having the right composure is 50% of sounding professional.

Composure is made up of many traits, and they work for anyone looking to advance their voice over career. They include being:

• LOOSE: let your voice flow, use body language. do not be stiff.
• CONFIDENT: go for it. do not be hesitant (but not arrogant either).
• EASY: relax…this is easy if you let it be easy. do not try too hard.
• UNINHIBITED: have fun, let go, enjoy it. do not be stilted.

The right composure makes all the difference.

3. Tension Free

Performing without tension is the other 50% of sounding professional (having the right composure (above) is the first 50%). In fact, reading without tension is, perhaps, the greatest technique voice-talent use.

Tension, in the voice over industry, refers to ‘vocal’ tension. Reading without tension means letting your mouth, throat, and voice box be loose. Let them work freely. Do not constrict them. This works well even when performing high-energy scripts.

3.) INCORPORATE EDGE STUDIO’S RESOURCES

Partner Programs.

feel welcome to use our Partner Programs.

The objective is to enhance your career and resume, as Edge Studio is one of the most trusted resources in the voice over industry.

If you tell your current instructor/school about Edge Studio’s Partner Programs, and they call us for more information, you receive an additional 10% off Partner Programs. 4.) AUDIOBOOKS…INTERESTED?

Thinking audiobooks?

You should be. Check out these statistics:
- Audiobooks are one of the fastest growing segments of the voice over industry.
- Audiobooks are currently estimated at 10% of the publishing industry.

At a fast rate, actors and non-actors are becoming literary narrators. So are union and non-union voice talent. So are voice over artists of all age groups. Audiobooks are recorded from both professional studios and home-studios, allowing voice-talent to work from anywhere. In summary, audiobook narration is available to most.

And with numerous audiobook niches, such as fiction, self-help, teen, sci-fi, contemporary classic, non-fiction, children, and so on, there should be an area, or more, for you.

Since audiobook narration requires a unique set of skills, since it is has a special group of listeners, and since it has become an "industry within the industry,” we will discuss, in detail, this industry in the next few issues of Voice Over Today.

Upcoming Voice Over Today issues will discuss:
- vocal talent requirements
- audiobook demos
- pay
- marketing

etc.) and 2) drafts of his own full-length screenplay. 3-hour sessions.
Straight reading of all text. No acting/voiceplay. Readings are held in his
small Chelsea studio apartment on weekends and weeknights. No pay, but good
practice accurately cold reading screenplay text and taking direction.
