2.) Is Your Voice in Need of a Tune-Up?
By Kristin Price
Edge Studio Voice Over Coach and Professional Voice Talent
So you’ve got your demo… you’ve got
marketing down to a science…
perhaps you’re out there auditioning… no need for additional
training, right?
Er, not right.
Even the busiest voice talent occasionally needs to come
in for a tune-up.
We get lazy, fall into habits, even forget some of the basics. Practicing
at
home is great, of course, but having another pair of ears listen to what
we’re doing can be invaluable.
For example: when I coach, I’m constantly reminding
my students to not
work so hard, to relax, do less, just “have that conversation,”
and get away
from any concept of deliberately dropping into “fabulous voice-over
voice”
(aka “announcer”). So imagine my mortification when I walked
into an audition,
gave what I felt was a well-crafted and “fabulous” read, and
heard the
casting director say, “um, Kristin – why are you working so
hard? Just say it!”
Time for a tune-up.
For newer talent, coming back in for classes or private
brush-up sessions is
even more important. Remember those nerves you felt when you started
training that perhaps made your voice and breath control go haywire?
Well, you may find those popping up again in your first few “real
world”
experiences. Group classes can help you get used to performing in front
of
other people, and offer a great opportunity to chat with other voice talent
and
hear how they approach the same issues you’re encountering. Private
sessions
can address specific things you’ve experienced and want to practice
or work
through.
Ultimately: keep reminding yourself that voiceover is
a business, and you are
a small-business owner (your voice being the product for sale). Successful
business owners spend time each year keeping up with the current trends,
attending training courses, and doing everything they can to ensure that
their
product and business model are as competitive and current as possible.
Why do any less for your voiceover career?

3.) CHARACTER/ANIMATION WORKSHOPS at Edge Studio
By Paul Liberti
Edge Studio Character Coach and Professional Voice Talent
So you're a character voice actor… or you want to be one. Just because
you have
a voice that sounds like a child… does not mean that you can convincingly
sound
like a child in voice over. Or maybe you make funny voices that make your
dog
howl… or your sister laugh… that does not mean that you can
make millions in the
next Dream Works Digital Cartoon. You need to create voices that are full
characters…
that have a psychological background ... that are believable. You need
to have a
rep company of actors within you ready to go at a moment’s notice.
This is why I created this Character/Animation Workshop... to prepare
you for
anything as a character performer. I don't know of any other workshop
like this
…anywhere... that gives you a true technique in creating animation
and commercial
characters that are uniquely your own.
My Character Animation Workshop comes in two parts. The first week we
begin by
setting up a technique for doing character voices and how to retrieve
them easily and
also switch from character to character effortlessly. The second half...
puts the work
that we did in the first week to use in further exploring more animation
and commercial
scripts. We also tackle doubles and the mic techniques needed to successfully
work
with another actor at the mic. I give a lot of insider tips and tricks
to keeping your
characters fresh and competitive with the very best actors out there.
All course materials are included... including a workshop booklet that
will continue to
allow your own characters to grow and expand.
The next workshops are in NYC are June 11th and 18th. Call the Edge Studio
office at:
1-888-321-3343.
We only allow 12 students, so book sooner than later as we will fill the
class pretty quickly.
I hope to see you there!
Paul Liberti
**Paul Liberti has been with Edge Studio for five years, and has worked
as a voice actor
for Nickelodeon, PBS, Sesame Street, 4 Kids Entertainment, Curious pictures,
Pokemon,
Cubix, and currently animated characters in commercials for Raid, Jet
Dry,
Arm and Hammer, 1-800-fedinfo and many others.

ACCURATE READERS WANTED
NYU-trained screenwriter-director needs volunteers to read aloud feature
scripts (The Shawshank Redemption, Erin Brockovitch, American Beauty,
etc.). Readers read all text on pages, without interpretation/acting,
and
(if there are two of you) rotate pages until the entire script is read.
Session takes up to 2-1/2 to 3 hours. No pay, but good practice cold
reading for and taking direction from director. You'll also get a CD copy
of your reading and a copy of the script you read aloud. For phone
audition, e-mail bob@bobslaymaker.net with "Reader" in subject.
If you
previously auditioned, feel free to audition again. Other tasks available
for those who don't want to read aloud but would like exposure/insight
into writing screenplays. Voiceover artists from outside New York City
are
welcome if they can record to wav or mp3 files.
