3.) A Demo by Any Other Name…
By Bruce Bayley Johnson* (excerpted from “Voiceovers and the Art of Automotive Repair”)

What’s in a name? Well, when it comes to the mp3 file of your voiceover demo…it can be the difference between sobbing quietly as you wait for the phone call that never comes and happily chattering into a microphone for money.

Before you start chewing on that creative pencil as you try to come up with something imaginative (like say: “Bruce Bayley Johnson – Gone With the Wind”)…let me make it clear, I’m not talking about a title for your mp3 demo. I’m talking about a clear, informative label.
David Goldberg has told me that he gets demos attached to emails that are named things like:
Audio-1.mp3
Bobspots.mp3
Commdem.mp3
Autospots.mp3
Narrdemo.mp3
Zx8971R.mp3

Even if he likes the way one of those demos sounds, he has to change the name in order to store it in a way that he can reference it later. So here’s rule number one about your voiceover demo. Label the mp3 file (which is the principal method of demo submission these days--in fact it usually lives on your website and you email the link to prospects) something clear and explanatory, like: Bruce Johnson – Commercials.mp3. Or Bruce Johnson – Narrations.mp3. (It’s okay to use your name instead of mine, but if you want to use mine it’s okay, I’ll get more calls that way.)
Be careful to make the file name shorter than 32 characters because longer names can produce problems on some systems. In fact, my Pro Tools tends to corrupt mp3 files with names that are too long. But make sure the file name tells clearly who you are, and what the demo is. *#345.mp3 or Audio12L-.mp3 won’t get you much work.
So what’s in a name? Everything. A demo by any other name might just get tossed in the trash of your prospect producer’s computer.

* Bruce Bayley Johnson: Among many national voice over campaigns, Bruce's most memorable voice over is, perhaps, as the signature voice of Lever 2000 ("For all your 2000 parts."). Bruce is the voice of Mayor Jeff on Disney's "P.B. and J. Otter," Mr. Swirly and many others on Disney's "Doug," and "Doug’s First Movie," as well as Mr. Spudinski (the couch potato) on Disney's "Jo Jo's Circus." He has narrated children’s videos for the likes of Random House, Weston Woods, PBS, and Scholastic. Also a Clio-winning copywriter and experienced audio producer, and Bruce maintains a state-of-the-art voice over home studio.

VOICEOVER ARTISTS WITH ABILITY TO RECORD MP3 OR WAV FILES WANTED TO READ ALOUD SCREENPLAYS

NYU-trained screenwriter-director seeks voiceover artists with the ability to record MP3 (preferred) or wav files. Read aloud the best professional screenplays--The Shawshank Redemption, The Color Purple, Brokeback Mountain, etc.--as well as my own screenplays, so that I may listen to your recordings as I read and analyze the screenplays. No pay, but good practice for Books-on-Tape and other voiceover work. For phone audition, please email bob@bobslaymaker.net with "Reader" in subject. (P.S. If you have a computer--laptop or desktop--you can buy an inexpensive microphone from Radio Shack and obtain freeware (Audacity) from the internet to record
MP3 files on to your computer.)
