question:  phone-patch - what is it?

answer:

Phone-Patch is a device that connects the voice-talent (at one studio) and a client (at another studio) via a standard telephone.

The purpose of a phone-patch is to allow someone to participate in the production of the voice over recording without physically needing to be there. At Edge Studio, a phone-patch unit allows us to hire and produce a voice over artist who lives far away. After producing the voice over talent over the telephone, they email us the recording.

Phone-patch is very popular in the voice-over industry. And therefore, it may be advantageous to have one in your home-studio. Units cost between $100 and $400 - they can be purchased at professional audio recording stores.
