Japanese Voice Over Accents and Tips

Japanese voice over has a distinct association with animation and video games, both of which are exported (and translated) widely. Unlike many of its neighbors, the language is not tonal, and therefore can take longer to say things than Chinese or Thai. However, because of its grammatical structure it can often translate some phrases from English into something as short as two syllables. So determining relative length can be a little difficult to predict when translating from western languages to Japanese.

Another aspect of Japanese to consider is rules regarding formality. There are many highly different degrees of formality of language in Japanese depending on the situation. In general, the more formal the language, the longer it takes to say. The level of formality depends on who you are and who you are addressing.

Just like with any language, when you are working with Japanese voice over, you need to consider a lot of things very carefully. What is your goal by translating to or from this language? Who is your specific audience within the group of people who speak this language? Do you know how to adapt your script to speak to this group?

Edge Studio is a full service audio production facility, and that’s not restricted to English. If you need Japanese voice over, we have you covered from the initial translation and adaptation to casting talent and language monitors to help lay down those final recording sessions.
