About the Chicago Voice-Over Scene

Who cares if the U.S.’s “Second City,” is now actually third in population?. It still boasts the archetypal home of improvisational comedy, the original The Second City – cradle of countless comedy performers from Elaine May and Joan Rivers to John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Bill Murray and Amy Poehler.

Long ago tagged “The Windy City” because of blow-hard politicians in that era (not to mention ambitious breezes off the lake), nowadays Sweet Home Chicago’s vocal performers use their pipes in a full range of high-quality ways. Chicagoland has more than ever to offer in the way of performing arts employment, entertainment and training.

When you’re through shopping on Chicago's famous Magnificent Mile, or walking in the many large and small parks along and near Lake Michigan, when you’ve strolled through the world-class museums of art, natural history and science and industry, and taken in a Cubs, White Sox, Bears or Blackhawks event, when you’ve done all that ... head up Lake Shore Drive to Sheridan Road (or take Metra or the El purple line to Evanston) and you’ll be a line-toss away from Northwestern University School of Communication’s acting department. Northwestern acting grads have included Stephen Colbert, Ana Gasteyer, Warren Beatty, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Seth Meyers, Tony Roberts, Jerry Orbach and scores of other famous names.

It’s just one of Chicago’s plethora of creative opportunities, many of which require a bit less commitment of tuition and time, although no less commitment to quality.

Chicago is home to Commercials, Narration, Audiobooks, Animation, Improv, and more!

Chicago is brimming with other acting schools and improv comedy venues, plus international and local advertising agencies (affording bountiful advertising, PR and corporate voice-over opportunities), recording studios and theatrical stages.

The city also has a rich radio broadcast history, in part thanks to geography. Its clear-channel AM stations were heard from the East Coast to the Rockies and beyond. Today, Chicago radio is even more widely heard through network syndication and the Internet. For example, NPR/Chicago Public Media’s Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me, and Chicago Public Media’s This American Life.

Chicago also hosts the production of Unshackled, an inspirational series that is broadcasting’s longest-running radio drama. And WGN Radio Theater airs classic recordings every Sunday night. Will audio theater return in a bigger way to the City of Big Shoulders? Is there a role in it for you?

Stay tuned!
