About the Toronto Voice-Over Scene

Like Chicago in the U.S., Toronto has been called Canada’s Second City, but for us it’s Canada’s First, the perfect analog to the artistic milieu and production savvy of our home bases in New York and LA.

Toronto is not only very artsy, it’s very international. Among its 9,000 restaurants, you’ll find multiple examples for virtually every type of food, and the city has been hosting international tourists in record numbers. Hosting 10-million visitors overnight each year from the Canada, the U.S. and overseas, an additional yearly 15-million or so come for a day of touring, business or both.

So, whatever your background, if you’re thinking of coming to Toronto as talent you’ll have plenty of company.

Toronto for Commercials, Narration, Audiobooks, Animation, Improv, you name it

The performing arts community supports notable theatrical productions, opera, symphonic concerts and ballet. Among the most widely known are the Toronto International Film Festival each September, and The Second City improv comedy club all year ’round. (Opened in 1973, it’s an offshoot of the original The Second City in Chicago.) But those are hardly the city’s only resources for learning and honing your acting skills and building your resume! Other improv clubs here include Bad Dog, Improv Toronto, The Social Capital and others. And professional acting troupes here are seriously dedicated to musical theater, children’s acting, shows for children, and other theatrical genres.

More than 200 TV series have recently been produced here. More than 350 films have been shot in Toronto – over a hundred of them since 2005 -- partly because of its resemblance of various Toronto locations to other major cities, but also because of the great talent and crews available.

You’ll be following in the footsteps of seemingly countless performers who hail from the region or got their start here. There have been, of course, the SCTV alumni (including John Candy, Rick Moranis, Catherine O’Hara, Eugene Levy and Harold Ramis), and the many who have wound up on Saturday Night live (such as Dan Aykroyd, Martin Short, Robin Duke, Phil Hartman, and Mike Meyers ... and did you know SNL producer Lorne Michaels is also from Toronto?), and other star performers, such as Ryan Stiles and Colin Mochrie.

But the list of great talent performing and earning their bones in Toronto is continually growing. You’ll have plenty of companies in which to shine.

When you’re here, to learn what’s on stage or just about anything else in the various arts, pick up a copy of Now magazine, or visit SeeTorontoNow.com.

A variety of local talent agencies represent union and non-union talent. And, if you can’t be here in person, you can be here online – the home offices of Voices.com are a mere couple of hours away by car, and they bring the casting world together every second of the day.

When your work is done, Toronto gives you plenty else to see and do. The city boasts eight pro sports teams, almost 50 museums and public galleries, and – in case you’re into animal-based character development -- a world-class zoo.
