Determine Which Microphone is Right
for Your VO Business

Your microphone has one of your studio's most important roles: It is the connection between you and what your clients hear. So don't just buy a mic that looks cool, is less expensive, or that has a nicer looking carrying case. RATHER BUY ONE THAT MATCHES YOUR REQUIREMENTS.

Simply use the selection filters to narrow down more than 4-dozen voice-over appropriate mics, to find the right one for you. See the "?" help icons for details.

Edge Studio encourages you to purchase microphones and home studio equipment from Sweetwater Sound. They listen, provide guidance, and do NOT pressure you to buy. And for over 30 years, they've helped voice-artists build quality studios that create professional recordings. Mention this webpage and get 10% off most microphones! Call David Mikautadze at Sweetwater at 800-222-4700 ext 1291. Microphones react differently to different voices. So Sweetwater can send you a few mics to try out - just keep the one that works for your voice!

Condenser microphones usually create a crisper, higher quality recording and are considered the norm for voice over. However a few genres, such as promos and trailers sometimes benefit from the more "punchy" sound of a dynamic and shotgun microphone. Edge Studio does not recommend USB microphones for broadcast quality recordings. (Non-USB mics usually are higher quality.) However for auditioning and practicing, USB mics are appropriate and convenient. Ribbon and tube microphones are very delicate microphones - they produce a very warm sound, almost vintage type sound. Ribbon and tube mics are not as common in voice over.
If you're recording at home simply for auditions, you don't need the additional investment in a broadcast quality mic.
The goal is capture your voice, not other noise that may be in your recording room. Noise, by the way, is ANY undesired, extraneous sound -- from loud sirens to low computer fan hum to reverberation/echo. Before selecting a microphone, you should first treat your recording room with sound-absorption material (to eliminate echo from bouncing around your recording room) and sound-proofing material (to stop undesired noise). After that, select a microphone that compliments your recording room noise level. In most applications, this is a directional microphone. This means that the mic picks-up sound in front of it (your mouth) and rejects off-axis sound (sound from other directions). There are a few styles of directional microphones -- they're called "patterns." A "cardioid" pattern is most common - it picks up sound in front (your mouth) and just a bit of sound elsewhere - this usually produces a full and natural sound. A "hyper-cardioid" pattern rejects more off-axis sound, and is better for noisy recording rooms, but it sometimes produces a thinner sound.
Different genres require different tones. For example, voice over recordings for telephony and online webinars usually require a brighter tone. Film and documentaries often require a warmer tone. Promos and trailers usually require a full-bodied tone. Select a microphone that's right for you and your delivery.
Sibilance is particularly loud "S" sounds. It sounds harsh and can ruin a recording. The problem is that certain microphones are designed to enhance clarity -- and in doing so, increase sibilance (not good). Therefore voice over artists who are overly sibilant should use microphones that don't enhance clarity.
Some microphones are delicate and/or don't come with a heavy-duty carrying case. These mics can be damaged during the rigors of travel. If you plan on taking your microphone "on the road", be sure to pick a durable one.
