  • Is the Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 sufficient for most voiceover usage?
  • Also recommended Yamaha AG03 - as suggested by George Whittam
  • Does anyone have any experience with the iRig interface or brand?
  • I am having problems with some of my recordings. The sound is a bit muddy, breathy and far away. How do I correct it for a more professional sound? =)
  • When submitting auditions, eg voice123, what RMS level do you shoot for in your gain, and do you compress for an audition??
  • Hello! I'm just getting started. Is it okay to have a USB mic, or is it preferable to have a more complex setup with a regular mic, mixer, etc. At this point I have a Samson GoMic and a MacBook Pro.
  • Does anyone know of a piece of software that will trip a relay (i.e. to ring a doorbell)?
  • What's the best position to speak into my microphone when recording. I have heard from a couple other voice talents that they don't speak directly into the front of the mic. Also, does having a deeper toned voice matter for positioning the mic?
  • Any recommendations on a cloud based backup system that will backup automatically?

This week's TalkTime was not recorded due to technical difficulties. Apologies for the inconvenience
  • How can I get started (marketing myself) without a produced demo?
  • I am going to my first ever VO conference, WOVOCON, and I'm excited, yet anxious. Could you give me your top 2 "Dos and Top 2 "Don'ts" for newbies like me at a VO conference.
  • Well unless the hear you're on fivrr or a newcomer with low funds. :) Then they're going to be not so nice.
  • Are VO conferences for talent only, or are there daytime activities for spouses and others while we are sessions?
  • Talk about Gravy for the Brain. Is it worth signing up?
  • On the subject of demos, when is it appropriate to send one to an agent? I'm a newbie and I don't want to jump the gun by sending my demo to one before I really should.
  • I have professional demos, I speak and sing, but I don't have a home studio. For each audition, I must schedule time, and pay, for my studio to produce my audition email. If I don't get the job, it's money spent. Is there a way to get an audition demo done without going to the studio? My choice is a phone recording, or home computer. Doesn't sound as good... as you can imagine. Eventually, I would like to make a home studio, but I need to make some cash as a voice actor first. Any suggestions?
Topic Talk - Online Casting Sites 05-21-2017

  • I’m currently booking at a rate of about 6% (auditions to projects ratio). Is that a good rate?
  • I've joined Voices.com. What's the difference between them and Voice123?
  • Are most jobs on pay-to-play sites dependent on us being able to produce a studio quality product? I can record a decent quality audition, but would need to get help mastering the final product.
  • I appreciate the opportunity to submit on the online sites-wish there was a way to gain some meaningful feedback...maybe a system that indicates rating based on things like quality of editing not good, voice not right and so on…
  • Voice123 penalizes people with less invitation if they audition too much. that is a big minus.
  • Is it necessary when registering with an online casting site to upload professionally produced demos OR can mp3 files of previous V/O recordings suffice?
  • Are the Pay-to-Play sites a good place for new talent to start?
  • How much do the two online casting sites charge?

Tech Talk 07-16-2017
July 16, 2017
  • What about using audio interfaces with a iPad and what software would you use with one?

  • I’ve been elected to narrate an audiobook. How long should I allocate to record it?
  • I have been told you have a great voice for this profession. Are there any websites ot locations on where I might learn about the business...and the technical end of recording and transmitting my work.
  • Do you have any advice for someone attempting to make a transition from FT radio production to adding or jumping into 100% to freelance VO work. I understand it's not the voice. I need a push over the edge. Your thoughts?
  • What are some solutions for apartment us dwellers who dont have a spare room, basement or walk in closet?
  • Suggestions for user friendly (easy) recording software for someone still learning Mac Book Pro. Paid for studio rental 3X and don't want to waste more money.

May 21, 2017
  • I’m currently booking at a rate of about 6% (auditions to projects ratio).
