Overview Description Of My Voice:

I'm the smart, young informative guy.

Dear David,

Thank you so much for teaching the audition workshop on Saturday! It was incredibly helpful to practice in-depth copy analysis and to learn about the pitfalls to avoid when recording auditions. The peer critique was a terrific way to train our ears and get us thinking about auditions from the perspective of these making casting decisions.

It was also so great to finally meet you! As I told you after the class, I've enjoyed the training program at Edge so much. I've learned a ton of useful information, and the people at the studio have all been friendly, helpful and encouraging every step of the way.

Thanks again for the awesome class - hope to work together again soon!

Amy

After years of wanting to see if V.O. might be a plausible avenue for me, and being nervous to take the plunge, I finally just took the $99 workshop with instructor Danielle Quisenberry. It was FANTASTIC. In dramatic improvement over an introductory V.O. class I'd attended elsewhere, this class size was intimate (5 students) so in addition to being fun and comfortable we all got a great amount of time and attention to work, adjust, and discuss; the technique guidebook is so clear and useful before even arriving, and once there, having it applied and explicated by Danielle was so clear and tangible and thrilling, all of her feedback *concrete* and *actionable*, I did indeed feel like I had a better grasp of the technical aspects in just one session, and had a much richer idea of how/whether/what part of the skillset and market I might be suited for and find most rewarding. I enjoyed it tremendously, find the prospect of working on this technique (and possibly industry) more exciting and heartening than I've felt in years, and I definitely recommend EDGE (as represented by Danielle) over alternative studios/courses.

Topic Talk - E-learning and Online Casting Tips and Tricks 02-14-2016
February 14, 2016
  • How do I deal with my total lack of experience when starting out on an online casting site? No reviews, etc
  • Especially important for E-learning is to have limited mouth noise. I am constantly battling this issue. I drink lots of water and wear Vaseline on my lips. I heard someone on an earlier Talk Time mentioning lip balm. Do you mean chap stick? Are there any other thoughts on the issue? I've also been told that it's possible I drink too much water. Is that possible?
  • Does anyone have any experience with e-learningvoices.com?
  • My E-Learning question: What are the top ways to get E-Learning clients?
  • Do the clients that are looking for auditions want a produced piece or just dry voice for the audition?
  • For a long E-learning job, do you usually ask for an advanced payment? For example with a new client?
  • There are 2 software programs specifically designed for E-learning: Word2Wav and Read2Record. Does anyone have any experience with either one (or ideally, with both of them) or have an opinion about which one is better to use?
  • Are E-learning jobs under union jurisdiction?
  • Any suggestions on how to deal with nasality issues?

  • Does anyone use an iPad for their primary recording device?
  • When traveling, what do you do to improve acoustics of your recording environment? (i.e. hotel rooms)
  • How long after completion of your first demo should an individual start their home studio?
  • What should my background noise levels be when recording? (noise floor)
  • Anyone use a PC to record? I have a PreSonus audiobox which I have to readjust each time I plug it into my PC. My PC seems to reset the sound levels every time. I'm thinking of using a MAC as apparently you don't have this sound reset issue the PC causes.
  • Hi all, greetings from Cordoba, Argentina. My question is when to send the audio, preferrerd to be in raw or dry. In my case I have used a Neumann TLM 103 or Telefunken AR-51, Pro Tools 12.4, Apogee duet and where I record this acoustically treated.
  • I use the RE20 in a more minially treated room and the result has been that it does most of the heavy lifting on reducing ambient noise. More expensive on the front end but reduces the need for as much investment on room prep and delivers a nice sound if you have enough gain to drive it.
  • Can you offer suggetions for comfortable headphones with the cleanest sound for VO monitoring?
  • Any thoughts on the Rode NT1A for home recording use?
  • My voice is described as being warm - is there a specific mic that would work well for my voice?

  • Do I have an opportunity to promote other character voices when auditioning for a single character in a script?
  • Are there agents that specialize in the video/animation arena? If so what is the best approach to contact them?
  • For the people who are doing video game voices, where are you obtaining the work? Agents, game developers directly, websites and open calls?
  • Should you reach out to friends in the business such as one who works for Disney in India?
  • So you are saying to contact companies like Activision and Electronic Arts?
  • What kind of fees can be expected?
  • If the game is a startup would you entertain the idea of paying points in conjunction with or instead of the up front payout?
  • When you’re starting out should you take all jobs offered or be selective?
  • Since the game is 'confidential' until it's released, how do you get a copy of your dialogue for your demo? Most of the video game VO demos I have seen are actually video captures of the game.
  • Do 'effort' voiceovers tend to be buyouts? Have "oof"s & "arrgh"s been used in subsequent games that you didn't voice?
  • With regard to animation is there REALLY no legitimate animation taking place outside LA, NY and Toronto?
  • Do you do most of your recording for video games at home, or in a studio with a director?
  • This question is about vocal care. It sounds like animation or video game narration would be hard on the voice. How do those voice actors care for their voices?

  • I just finished my first pfh book through ACX. When the book sells will I see my sales dashboard change? I'm thinking probably not because it's not royalty share.
  • Are there any other resources for audio book production in addition to ACX?
  • If you are just starting out what would you put in your ACX profile?
  • At what point do you feel comfortable going back to a new author and saying that the script “needs a polish”, i.e. an edit?
  • Is it acceptable to contact the author directly, or do you always have to go through the rights-holder?
  • Can you use readings from public domain books for demos on your own web site?

  • How do I find workout groups?
  • What if I’m not happy with my demo after it’s delivered to me? Can I ask the production house to let me re-record some of the segments?
  • What exactly do demo producers do that makes a professionally made demo so much better? I normalize, equalize, compress, add a little reverb or echo where needed, is it a matter of equipment? Skill?
  • Does my home studio in Podunk Virginia have to deliver the same quality as my professionally produced demo?
  • How important is it to have a coach/demo producer with specific expertise and experience in the genre that you are focused on?
  • In a smaller market, good demo producers are either hard to find or just not present. Are there quality services for producing demos remotely?
  • in addition to your 'showcase' demos. should you have a library set of genre samples of dry reads that demonstrates your home studio quality
  • Is it ok if your first demo is commercial? I was going to do a narration demo first, but find I really love commercial copy.
  • Based on Gerald's comment, is there a first demo priority? What should you cut first to get work?
  • Can you ever use actual work that you produced for a customer as a demo?

  • Is E-Learning simply educational narration, or does it include interactive technology?
  • Is there some special software we need to modularize E-Learning?

  • Could you expand on long form narration?

  • If you are recording an E-Learning project at home is it typically self directed or is client on the line with you as you record?
  • What should an E-Learning demo consist of? How long should it be?
  • Is E-Learning work more likely to lead to repeat business with the production company or with the particular client?
  • This is a question about editing E-Learning projects. When doing an E-Learning project, do narrators prefer to self edit the audio, or send it out for editing? Which one is faster?

  • Should you reach out to friends in the business such as one who works for Disney in India?
  • So you are saying to contact companies like Activision and Electronic Arts?
  • What kind of fees can be expected?

Topic Talk - E-learning and Online Casting Tips and Tricks 02-14-2016
