Monster by Jonathan Kellerman
We want someone who can create distinct characters for our adult mystery audiobook. The narrator is a consulting psychologist who uses his training to unlock things in the minds of victims and takes what he learns to track down the criminals. Detective Sturgis is the narrator's friend who works for the LAPD. Dollard is a guard for the prison hospital's mental ward, which they are touring in this segment. Sturgis and (of course) the narrator are major characters, so we want to hear voices for them that you can sustain consistently throughout the book.
"Don't wear khaki or brown," Sturgis had said. "The inmates wear that, we don't want you stuck in there--though that would be interesting, wouldn't it? Shrink trying to convince them he's not crazy?"
We were halfway across now, passing more dead eyes, frozen faces, wild looks that set up the small hairs on the back of my neck.
"Incompetent to stand trial," continued Dollard. "Your basic 1026."
"How many do you have here?" I asked.
"Twelve hundred or so." Said Dollard.
Remember to check Archived Contests next Friday to learn who won, with explanations of why they won and why others didn’t, and hear some examples of each.
