    Great Britain

The desperate tourist's quest for his or her ancestral tartan has brought lots of business - and lots of amusement - to modern Scots. In fact, tartans originally had no clan affiliation, indicating only the geographic base of the wearer. It wasn't until the 19th century's mounting romanticization of the Scottish medieval past that the kilt craze really began. King George the IV kicked it all off by buying £1,354 worth of the Regal Stuart tartan during his 1822 visit to Edinburgh.
