Spanish voice over can be very specific to certain regions. While there is a basic Spanish language, Spanish varies widely depending on the country - and even the exact province of the speaker. Differences are variations in vocabulary, rhythm, intonation, and idioms. Hispanic people can often distinguish which part of the world they come from just by the "colors" of their speech.

Although there is a prevalence of Mexican people in the Los Angeles area and a large Puerto Rican population in New York City, there has been such a great influx of Latinos from so many countries one can no longer pinpoint a specific Spanish dialect to an area of the US.

Common Spanish types:

  • Castilian Spanish (European or Iberian Spanish) is generally considered the "mother version" of the language and would be universally understood by any Spanish speaker. This Spanish is without the "th" sound used for the letters "c" and "z" (developed due to a king that had a lisp many centuries ago, or so the story goes).
  • Mexican Spanish
  • Caribbean Spanish (also has many types, including: Cuban Spanish, Puerto Rican Spanish, Dominican Spanish)

Spain’s Spanish has significant contrasts between the Asturian Spanish in the north and the Andalusian Spanish in the South.

Columbian Spanish is considered the most "neutral" South American Spanish, although there still are specific qualities that would identify the speaker as Columbian.

South American Spanish has dialects that vary from country to country including: Chilean, Equadorian, and Columbian.

Just like with any language, when you are working with Spanish voice over, you need to consider a lot of things very carefully. What is your goal by translating to or from this language? Who is your specific audience within the group of people who speak this language? Do you know how to adapt your script to speak to this group?
