From 1892 to 1954, over twelve million immigrants entered the United States through the portal of Ellis Island, a small island in New York Harbor. Ellis Island is located in the upper bay just off the New Jersey coast, within the shadow of the Statue of Liberty. Through the years, this gateway to the new world was enlarged from its original 3.3 acres to 27.5 acres by landfill supposedly obtained from the ballast of ships, excess earth from the construction of the New York City subway system and elsewhere.
Before being designated as the site of one of the first Federal immigration station by President Benjamin Harrison in 1890, Ellis Island had a varied history. The local Indian tribes had called it "Kioshk" or Gull Island. Due to its rich and abundant oyster beds and plentiful and profitable shad runs, it was known as Oyster Island for many generations during the Dutch and English colonial periods. By the time Samuel Ellis became the island's private owner in the 1770's, the island had been called Kioshk, Oyster, Dyre, Bucking and Anderson's Island. In this way, Ellis Island developed from a sandy island that barely rose above the high tide mark, into a hanging site for pirates, a harbor fort, ammunition and ordinance depot named Fort Gibson, and finally into an immigration station.
From 1794 to 1890 (pre-immigration station period), Ellis Island played a mostly uneventful but still important military role in United States history. When the British occupied New York City during the duration of the Revolutionary War, its large and powerful naval fleet was able to sail unimpeded directly into New York Harbor. Therefore, it was deemed critical by the United States Government that a series of coastal fortifications in New York Harbor be constructed just prior to the War of 1812.
After much legal haggling over ownership of the island, the Federal government purchased Ellis Island from New York State in 1808. Ellis Island was approved as a site for fortifications and on it was constructed a parapet for three tiers of circular guns, making the island part of the new harbor defense system that included Castle Clinton at the Battery, Castle Williams on Governor's Island, Fort Wood on Bedloe's Island and two earthworks forts at the entrance to New York Harbor at the Verrazano Narrows. The fort at Ellis Island was named Fort Gibson in honor of a brave officer killed during the War of 1812.

Like Tante Verde, Sun Ridge Canyon is surrounded by mountainous desert terrain. But here the lush, green fairways sit upon the floor of the mountain canyons themselves.
Wicked indeed, and wickedly fun for those who love a challenge. Once again, multiple sets of tees are in play. So don’t give old many par an unfair advantage. And don’t get the impression that Sun Ridge Canyon is target on golf with difficult carries. The fairways are generous. Most turned from tee through green. Still, sooner or later, you’re gonna go astray. Don’t forget to look up and enjoy the final three holes. It’s desert canyon golf at its finest.
The desperate tourist's quest for his or her ancestral tartan has brought lots of business - and lots of amusement - to modern Scots. In fact, tartans originally had no clan affiliation, indicating only the geographic base of the wearer. It wasn't until the 19th century's mounting romanticization of the Scottish medieval past that the kilt craze really began. King George the IV kicked it all off by buying £1,354 worth of the Regal Stuart tartan during his 1822 visit to Edinburgh.
But expensive trinkets can't conceal Bath's sophistication. Once second only to London as the social capital of England, Queen Anne's visit to the natural hot springs here in 1701 established Bath as one of the great meeting places for 18th-century British artists, politicians, and intellectuals. Heavily bombed in World War II, Bath has been painstakingly restored so that today, too, every thoroughfare is fashionable, though more hair salons than literary salons grace its fair streets.

The English call Leeds Castle "the loveliest castle in the world,” and for good reason. Built in 857, the castle has been home to such English royalty as Edward I, Henry V and Henry VIII. Inside, visitors can see centuries-old paintings, tapestries and furniture. Outside, the grounds are often shrouded in a morning mist, which, as the day goes on, lifts to reveal exquisite gardens, vineyards and even a golf course. An aviary, set in a walled garden and overlooking the lake, houses a variety of birds, including parrots, parakeets and softbills. But the most elegant activity at Leeds Castle is the black-tie dinner in the Henry VIII Banqueting Hall, served by a butler and footmen. It’s an experience fit for a king.
The American Society of Travel Agents will be holding its annual conference in Lisbon this year. Some 7,000 delegates will gather in the Portuguese capital early in November. They have been invited to take part in pre-conference or post-conference tours, which will give them the chance to see the countrysides, castles and palaces, churches and historic universities, and to meet the Portuguese people. Most of the time, however, they will be in Lisbon, and their choice of a conference site was timely. Lisbon was selected Cultural Capital of Europe for all of 1994. The organizers of Lisbon ‘94 have scheduled a stellar program of opera, theater, and sightseeing.
The Lower East Side Tenement Museum's mission is to promote tolerance and historical perspective through the presentation and interpretation of the variety of immigrant and migrant experiences on Manhattan's Lower East Side, a gateway to America.
Today, although most citizens trace the beginnings of their American journeys to the urban rather than the rural environment and most descend from immigrants, The Tenement’s landmark tenement building at 97 Orchard Street is the first homestead of urban working class and poor immigrant people preserved and interpreted in the United States. Located on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, an immigrant portal for almost two centuries, 97 Orchard Street was home to an estimated 7,000 people from more than 20 nations between 1863 and 1935.
The Tenement is a designated National Historic Site, affiliated with the National Park Service and a featured property of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In fiscal year 2006, The Tenement hosted nearly 125,000 visitors, representing all 50 states and more than 30 countries; its website at www.tenement.org received more than 300,000 online visitors.
Visitors to The Tenement tour carefully restored apartments and learn about the lives of actual past residents: the German Jewish Gumpertz (1870s) who lived through the Great Panic of 1874; the Levines from Poland (1897), who ran a garment business in their apartment; the Rogarshevsky family, Eastern European Jews (1918) mourning the loss of their patriarch from tuberculosis; the Sephardic Jewish Confino family (1916), the focus of an interactive family-oriented living history program; and the Baldizzi family, Italian Catholics from Sicily (1930s), who were among The Tenement’s last residents during the Great Depression.
With an anticipated opening in early 2007, The Tenement is researching the Moores, an Irish Catholic family in residence during the Civil War. Lower East Side Stories, The Tenement’s neighborhood walking tour, showcases the area’s complex history.
Close your eyes. Inhale the exotic aromas of rich dark coffee, fresh baked baguettes, and old-fashioned toasty Gauloises tobacco wafting across a small market square. You’re undoubtedly somewhere in the south, maybe close to the Riviera, where the summer heat verges on tropical, but the breezes are cool and rattle the awnings of the market stalls. Open your eyes. It’s a hilltop village on the Caribbean island of Martinique, and you’re enjoying one of those customary do-nothing, coffee and wine-sipping, people-watching interludes that the French seem to love so much.

The Florida Panhandle, that narrow strip of the Sunshine State bordered by Alabama, Georgia, and the Gulf of Mexico, boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. The sand here is sugar-white, and the waters shimmer in shades of blue and green, rivaling the Caribbean. The surf is gentle, and there's no abrupt drop-off, so you can wade far out into the warm gulf waters searching for sand dollars. Fragrant pine forests, bays and lakes teeming with fish, and lazy, sand-bottomed rivers fringe the shore.
One of the most beautiful parts of the Panhandle is an area called the Beaches of South Walton. Located in Walton County, the beaches lie along Scenic 30-A, a two-lane road lined with cottages, locally owned eateries, shops, and art galleries. You won't find a chain motel or fast food restaurant anywhere along the road and no water slides, miniature golf courses, or souvenir emporiums either.
