Hungarian Voice Over Translation Chart, Accents and Tips

  • Hungarian is generally 10-15% shorter than English. (An English :60-second commercial will be about :50-seconds in Hungarian).
  • English is generally 10-15% longer than Hungarian.(A Hungarian :60-second commercial will be about :67-seconds in English).

Hungarian voice over is something of a rare specialty. Hungarian is one of Europe's most distinct languages, and is often difficult to translate from or to any other language. The closest relatives of Hungarian are out in western Siberia. Hungarian is technically also related to Finnish, but has enough differences to make the languages so different that native speakers of each language often have a hard time finding a single word in common.

Hungarian is mostly spoken in Hungary and the surrounding areas, especially parts of western and central Romania. Its system of postfixes and modifiers can make up for some very, very long and, to native English speakers, near-unpronounceable words like megszentségteleníthetetlenségeskedéseitekért (rough translation: “because of your continuous pretending to be indesecratable”).

Just like with any language, when you are working with Hungarian voice over, you need to consider a lot of things very carefully. What is your goal by translating to or from this language? Who is your specific audience within the group of people who speak this language? Do you know how to adapt your script to speak to this group?
