Thai Voice Over Translation Chart, Accents and Tips

Thai voice over's length can be a little deceptive. It is a tonal language, which would normally make it shorter than non-tonal languages like English. But the number of vowels and consonants in Thai are somewhat limited, which means that each word can be longer. Also many names have formal versions that can be very long. For example, the common Thai form of the capital city, called Bangkok in English, is Krung Thep Maha Nakhon in shortened form and in full form is Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Yuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Phiman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit.

Another thing to keep in mind is that in formal speech, men and women use different endings to their sentences. The women's ending is slightly longer than the men's. This will only make a difference in recording length compounded in a long recording. Shorter recordings should be relatively unaffected.

Just like with any language, when you are working with Thai voice over, you need to consider a lot of things very carefully. What is your goal by translating to or from this language? Who is your specific audience within the group of people who speak this language? Do you know how to adapt your script to speak to this group?
